OPP internal investigation of inappropriate release of prisoner

ORILLIA, ON, Nov. 16, 2011 /CNW/ -  The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is conducting an internal investigation into the release of a person in custody by a member of the Red Lake OPP Detachment.

The OPP's Professional Standards Bureau (PSB) initiated the investigation into a report that on October 29, 2011, a person in the custody of the OPP under the Provincial Offences Act was released from custody on a highway, several kilometres away.

The OPP acted immediately when it became aware of this matter and holds all employees accountable to the core value of professionalism. A member of the Red Lake OPP Detachment has been suspended from duty.

The OPP values strong, effective relationships and partnerships with communities and stakeholders and will be conducting a thorough and professional investigation into the incident.
